The Danger of High Cholesterol

It may not be a big surprise for us that most of the foods we love have very high rates of cholesterol. You might have heard that there is good and bad cholesterol. Thus, it is important to distinguish between the two. Good cholesterol is called as high density lipoprotein (HDL) and the bad one is low density lipoprotein (LDL).

The more cholesterol and less protein a lipoprotein has, the less dense it is. It is very important to avoid LDL or at least try to eat foods that contain low amount of LDL cholesterol because too much of it can cause heart disease. So how do you know which foods have high cholesterol?

There are two main ingredients that will raise your cholesterol levels, namely saturated fat and LDL cholesterol. Those are mostly found in animal products. Some foods that are considered high cholesterol include red meats, nuts, and dairy foods. However, not all of them are bad.

This is why it is important to monitor the saturated fat content in foods because the more there is, the harder the liver has to work to detoxify the body. Another reason is because subsequent LDL cholesterol from bad fats will create plaque inside arteries, veins, and capillaries. This condition can result in serious, if not deadly, cardiovascular diseases like heart attacks.
