The overall trend is to use the term urinary tract infection (UTI) when there are clinical symptoms associated with a significant bacterial count in urine by the procedure of collecting the urine sample for urine culture.
When there are no specific symptoms we were in for asymptomatic bactery or a false positive urine culture, which is very often dependent on the method of collection of urine in children continents, with nonspecific symptoms and use of collection bags.
UTI is a significant morbidity due to acute problems, with or without kidney damage and the possibility of medical problems described in the long run such as hypertension or chronic renal failure, although this is not sufficiently demonstrated at present.
Attendance at these children involves repeated medical visits, multiple antibiotics, relatively invasive complementary examinations and high cost.
