Nurse Jobs in the Prison System
Not all nurse jobs require hospital or nursing home work, inmates of prisons require heath care too. A nurse working in a prison may be required to perform the same duties as a nurse in a hospital, with the addition of helping prevent prisoners from returning to the prison. This can be accomplished by various methods, including helping prisoners change unhealthy habits that may have lead to their incarceration. A background in substance abuse prevention will come in handy.
Few nursing jobs are as rewarding as helping a person change a behavior that has landed them in prison. Prison nursing is fast-paced, as is any nursing job, but the hours tend to be better. The job may entail health assessments, in addition to providing treatment.
A caring, compassionate, and non-judgmental attitude is a must for working in a prison. You may be required to care for people that have committed heinous crimes. The understanding that the prisoners still deserve quality health care is essential.
A prison nurse who is competent and can recognize problems , or when a person is not telling the truth, will be looked upon as an angel by inmates. The nurse may be the only person they see that is concerned about their well-being. This is a heavy responsibility. It is also very rewarding, and worth looking into if you are bored in your present nursing job.
