Caffeine could prevent MS
Mice receiving the equivalent of six to eight cups of coffee a day were protected against the development of multiple sclerosis in a research from Cornell University presented at the Experimental Biology Conference 2008.

Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system (CNS) in which the body’s immune system attacks and damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
Allowing immune cells to enter the central nervous system is unknown. Previous research has indicated that adenosine could be responsible for the infiltration of immune cells across the blood-brain barrier (1).
The stimulant effects of caffeine on the brain are largely due to its ability to bind to the same receptors as adenosine.
Researchers Margaret S. Bynoe, Jeffrey H. Mills and colleagues have given caffeine to mice to test if the latter, by binding to the same receptors as adenosine could block its action and thus preventing immune cells from crossing the blood-brain barrier.
The results indeed showed that mice taking caffeine were protected against the development of autoimmune encephalomyelitis, the animal model of multiple sclerosis.
Recent research has also shown a benefit to the health of coffee would be to protect against Alzheimer’s by inhibiting cholesterol to cross the blood-brain barrier.
Protection against Parkinson’s and cons of skin cancer are also the benefits of caffeine have been shown recently.
Bed-sharing Might not be Healthy
Couples should consider sleeping in separate beds for the sake of their health and their relationship, experts say.
The sleep expert Dr Neil Stanley, raised this in the Festival of British science through a study that determined on average, than couples suffer more sleep problems in 50% when sharing a bed.
Dr. Stanley, who slept separately from his wife, noted that historically, the modern tradition of the double bed only began with the industrial revolution, when people had to move to overcrowded cities and towns had very little living space.
Before the Victorian era, was not uncommon for married couples sleeping separately and in ancient Rome, the bed was a place for sex, but not to sleep.
Dr. Stanley, who created one of the main sleep laboratories in Britain, University of Surrey, said that people today should consider doing the same.
“This is what we assess what makes us happy. If you’ve been sleeping with a partner and both sleep very well, then you need not change, but do not be afraid to do something different in the opposite”
Dr. Robert Meadows, a sociologist at the University of Surrey, said: “People feel like they really sleep better when they are with a partner, but the evidence suggests otherwise.”
Based on 40 couples, found that when couples share a bed and one moves into their dream, there is a 50% chance that your sleeping partner will be affected by it.
Antidepressants Linked To Bone Loss
Class of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin inhibitor withdrawal (SSRIs), can increase the speed of bone loss. Please note that the studies are documented in these findings are still preliminary data and should not be seen as a reason for changing treatment. The results published in the Archives of Internal Medicine June 25,
Dr. Susan Diem, the study’s lead author and assistant professor of medicine at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine said the findings were still preliminary stage, people that time use SSRIs should not stop treatment based on these findings. Further research is needed before a conclusion.
SSRIs are widely prescribed to treat depression and other disorders and is a two-thirds of antidepressant prescriptions in the United States. These drugs inhibit the proteins that transport of serotonin, a neurotransmitter involved in depression and sleep. Serotonin receptor is also found in bone. Diem said, this leads to the question of whether SSRI drugs will have an effect on bone.
The study involved 2722 elderly women with an average of 78.5 years. Total hip bone density and hip bone area was measured both at the beginning of the study and measured again 5 years later. Each time you visit, participants were asked to bring all the medications used during the last 2 weeks. After adjustment for other factors, the researchers found that bone mineral density at the hip decreased 0.82% in women using SSRIs and 0.47% in those taking the older tricyclic antidepressants and who did not use antidepressants. SSRI users also higher speed bone loss in both the bottom of the hip.
Based on the results of this study, not yet known the cause of the difference between the two groups. Dr. Diem said, “We found that the use of SSRI class of drugs associated with increased bone loss rate in the group of older women, but this study did not determine basically whether the drugs themselves are responsible for increasing the speed of bone loss or whether there are other differences between the two groups were responsible for bone loss. For example, depression itself is associated with increased rate of bone loss and those who use SSRIs for depression. Dr Diem continued that this work needs to be confirmed in other populations to determine whether this drug effect on fracture rate.
A second study published in the new edition of Archives of Internal Medicine, involved 5995 men aged 65 and older, found that men SSRI users also had lower bone density at the hip and spine. Total hip bone mineral density 3.9% lower among SSRI users compared with men who did not use antidepressants. Spine density 5.9% lower in SSRI users compared to non-users.
Like the study involving women, no significant difference in bone mineral density among male users of tricyclic antidepressants and who did not use antidepressants. Men trazodone antidepressant users have a bone density similar to those not using antidepressants.
Diet for Patients with Hypertension
Who suffer from coronary artery atherosclerotic, in addition to being not elastic, also narrowed so that the resistance to blood flow in coronary vessels also rose. Rise in systolic pressure because blood vessels are not elastic and increase in diastolic pressure due to narrowing of blood vessels, known as high blood pressure or hypertension. His full name is essential hypertension.
Restricted amount of fluid, or fluid / water to drink more than usual to the patient, also turned out to be no impact on blood pressure.
Low-salt diet is generally recommended for patients with high blood pressure. But many medical experts who still doubt the effects of low-salt diet on blood pressure reduction.
The more so if the content of sodium in the diet of people in over 250 grams a day. So for a low-salt diet had an impact in the form of reduction in blood pressure, the sodium content in the diet should be between 200-250 mg daily.
If used diet with about 200 mg sodium levels, the diet should be given for long periods of time. Therefore, patients with hypertension, even though he had never salt diet, there is also need medication to lower blood pressure.
