With proper treatment, symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency begin to improve within days. In vegans and other people with vitamin B12 deficiency due to diet, oral supplements of vitamin B12 and a diet designed to increase consumption of vitamin B12 should cure this condition. People with pernicious anemia or people who can not absorb vitamin B12 from their intestines will need injections of vitamin B12 every three months or indefinitely.

Prevention

To prevent vitamin B12 deficiency, vegans should consume adequate amounts of vitamin B12 supplements to compensate for the deficiency in your diet.
For people who can not absorb vitamin B12, the condition can be prevented. However, once diagnosed, regular injections of vitamin B12 prevent recurrence of symptoms.

Treatment

The treatment of this condition involves giving the amount of vitamin B12 is lacking. People who can not absorb vitamin B12 need regular injections. When the injections are placed first, a patient with severe symptoms may receive five to seven injections during the first week to re-establish the necessary reserves of this nutrient in the body. Treatment response is usually seen within 48 to 72 hours with a rapid production of red blood cells. Once you achieve normal levels of vitamin B12, vitamin injections are placed every one to three months to prevent the occurrence of the condition. People who can not absorb vitamin B12 should continue with a balanced diet that provides other nutrients (folic acid, iron and vitamin C) necessary to produce healthy blood cells. Sometimes people can take high doses of vitamin B12 by mouth that are able to take this vitamin to normal instead of placed injections, however the doctor should monitor this very closely.
In people with vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with an overgrowth of intestinal bacteria, treatment with oral antibiotics such as tetracycline (available in several brand names) could stop this bacterial overgrowth and allow the absorption of vitamin B12 return to normal.
Deficiency of vitamin B12 deficiency as a result of inadequate is the easiest to treat. This disease can be cured by taking oral supplements of vitamin B12 by eating foods containing vitamin B12.
When anemia is severe and the blood count is extremely low, it may be necessary to use blood transfusions for a couple of days until the vitamin B12 injections begin to work.

When To Call a Professional

Contact your doctor for an exam if you experience fatigue, palpitations, shortness of breath, sore tongue or any other symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency. This is especially important if you are vegan, are over 50 years and an African American or northern European, or have removed the stomach.

Forecast

The prognosis is excellent because this form of anemia responds well to treatment. However, it is possible that the nerve cell damage is permanent. Could be some residual damage to the nervous system in people who later underwent a treatment for this condition.

Symptoms tend to develop slowly and may not be recognized immediately. The most common symptoms include:

- weakness or fatigue
- dizziness and vertigo
- palpitations and rapid heartbeat
- shortness of breath
- sore throat and red fleshy
- nausea or poor appetite
- weight loss
- diarrhea
- yellowing of the skin and eyes

If low levels of vitamin B12 and remain for a long time, the condition can lead to irreparable damage of nerve cells, which can cause the following symptoms:

- numbness and tingling in hands and feet
- difficulty walking
- muscle weakness
- irritability
- memory loss
- dementia
- depression
- psychosis

Diagnosis

Your doctor will ask about your diet and family history of anemia. Control their disease history (diabetes and immune disorders) or surgeries, such as removal of the stomach, which could cause a deficiency of vitamin B12.

They doctor may suspect you have a vitamin B12 based on your medical history and symptoms. To confirm the diagnosis, the doctor will examine you and ask for laboratory analysis. During the physical exam, it will check if your tongue is beefy red, her skin is pale and yellow, has a rapid pulse and heart murmurs due to increased demand for blood flow from the heart, associated with anemia. Laboratory tests include:

- Blood tests to measure the level of red blood cells and to control its appearance: the deficiency of vitamin B12, red blood cells are unusually large and look abnormal.
- Blood tests to measure levels of vitamin B12 might also measured the levels of iron and folic acid to control the deficiencies in these nutrients.
- Blood tests to measure the level of methylmalonic acid: methylmalonic acid level increases when a person is deficient in vitamin B12.
- Blood tests to measure the intrinsic factor antibody: your doctor may ask a special analysis of the antibody levels to determine if you have pernicious anemia. Most people who lack intrinsic factor in the stomach has this antibody in the blood.
- Bone marrow biopsy: occasionally, it is a bone marrow biopsy to help confirm the diagnosis. This procedure removes a small sample of bone marrow by inserting a needle into the pelvic bone just below the waist on either side of the column. The bone marrow sample is examined in the laboratory to detect other causes of anemia and abnormal red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 is needed to produce normal amounts of healthy red blood cells in the bone marrow. Vitamin B12 is present only in foods of animal origin (meat and dairy products) or yeast extracts (such as yeast). Is defined as a deficiency of vitamin B12 to B12 low levels stored in the body, which can cause anemia, a lower than normal number of red blood cells.

Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop for the following reasons:

Lack of intrinsic factor, also called pernicious anemia, intrinsic factor is a protein secreted by cells lining the stomach. Intrinsic factor attaches to vitamin B12 and moves to the intestines where it is absorbed. The absence of intrinsic factor is the most common cause of pernicious anemia. The absence of intrinsic factor is often associated with a condition called atrophic gastritis, a thinning of the stomach lining. Atrophic gastritis is more common in older African American or northern Europe. In these people, pernicious anemia comes about 60 years. In children, lower levels of intrinsic factor may be a hereditary condition.

When this happens, low levels of intrinsic factor produce symptoms of juvenile pernicious anemia in patients under 10 years. Pernicious anemia occurs more commonly in people who already have diseases related to immune system abnormalities, such as Graves disease, hypothyroidism (low functioning thyroid gland), thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid), vitiligo and Addison’s disease (adrenocortical insufficiency ).

Removal or destruction of the stomach: Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop in people who had surgery to remove part or all of the stomach.

Bacterial overgrowth: some people are deficient in vitamin B12 as a result of conditions that slow the movement of food through the intestines (diabetes, scleroderma, strictures (narrowing), diverticula, which causes intestinal bacteria to multiply and grow overrepresented in the upper small intestine. These bacteria are proper vitamin B12 for their own use, rather than allow the body to absorb.

Nutritional deficiency: vegetarians (those who follow a strict diet and do not consume any meat, eggs or dairy products) may be deficient in vitamin B12 because they do not include this vitamin in their diets. In patients with bulimia or anorexia nervosa, vitamin B12 deficiency may also be related to diet. However, your liver can store vitamin B12 for up to 5 years, so it is rare that a diet deficient in vitamin B12 cause.

We know that the food we eat affect our bodies, but could further influence the functioning of our brain. Thus, mood, motivation and mental performance depend largely on the diet.

The brain is extremely active from the metabolic viewpoint, hungry and, at the same time delicate. And, according to research, is becoming increasingly clear that the right foods (or natural neurochemicals they contain) can improve mental skills, improve concentration and motor and sensory skills, maintaining a motivated person greatly increase the memory, speed reaction times, ease stress and perhaps even prevent brain aging.

There is growing evidence that a diet rich in fatty foods and low in fruits and vegetables is not only bad for the heart and is associated with certain types of cancer, but can also cause depression and aggression.

The health of the brain not only depends on the amount of fat consumed, but also the type to which they belong. For good performance, the brain needs a type of fat commonly found in fish, omega-3. The type of fat is so important that even a diet that meets recommended levels of fat, but the wrong kind, can undermine intelligence. This complicates things, as some oils recommended as healthy for the heart are especially troublesome for the mind.

Most people consume too much fat, much of it saturated, but few consume enough omega-3 fatty acids. Polyunsaturated oils recommended as healthy for your heart just contain this type of fatty acids, but are full of omega-6 fatty acids, when in fact what our body needs is a balance between omega-3 and omega-6. One way to increase omega-3 is, for example, use canola oil or walnut oil for cooking.

A new study by Professors Lynn and Vanhanen, the Tampere University of Ulster and has found that the richest countries are those with the highest average IQ. According to the authors, this is because the CI is determined largely by the nutrition of pregnant women and children during infancy.

It can increase mental acuity, memory and resistance to stress eating foods that contain components important precursors of brain neurotransmitters such as choline, a B vitamin found in eggs. Some studies have shown that choline supplements improve memory and reaction time in animals, especially in old age. In people, they also improve memory and reduce fatigue.

Other foods that influence mental performance are sugar and carbohydrates. Research shows that sugar makes us more alert, although nobody has yet to determine what the correct dose at the time. As for carbohydrates, are very good for the mind, especially when taken without mixing them with protein or fat.

According to an article in ScienceDaily, a small pilot study of 50 people, conducted in Japan suggests that eating about 70g of broccoli sprouts daily for two months may confer some protection against a proliferating stomach bacteria that causes gastritis, ulcers and even stomach cancer.

The study indicates that a dose of broccoli sprouts daily reduces more than 40% the level of HpSA, a highly specific indicator of the presence of components of H. pylori expelled in the stool of infected persons. No changes in the level of HpSA in subjects who took control alfalfa sprouts. The HpSA levels returned to pretreatment levels eight weeks after that people would stop making broccoli sprouts, suggesting that although reducing the colonization of H. pylori, not eradicate the bacteria.

“The highlight of the study is a food that we identified that, if eaten regularly, potentially mighthHave an effect on the cause of a lot of gastric problems and perhaps even prevent ultimately help stomach cancer,” says Jed W. Fahey, MS, Sc.D., an author of the paper who is a nutritional biochemist in the Lewis B. and Dorothy Cullman Cancer Center at the Johns Chemoprotection Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The discovery that sulforaphane is a potent antibiotic against H. pylori was performed in 2002 by Jed W. Fahey, author of this work, and colleagues at Johns Hopkins. “Broccoli sprouts contain a much higher concentration of sulforaphane than mature heads,” Fahey explains, adding that further studies will be necessary to confirm the results of this clinical trial.

This study, published April 6 in Cancer Prevention Research, builds on previous studies in test tubes and in mice at Johns Hopkins and elsewhere about the potential value of sulforaphane, a natural biochemical substance relatively abundant in fresh broccoli sprouts. Sulforaphane appears to activate some cells of the body including the gastrointestinal tract, to produce enzymes that protect against free radicals, chemicals that damage DNA and inflammation.

In recent years have come to light some interesting clues on the subject, including the idea that it might be beneficial to reduce the intake of calories. It seems that reducing our caloric intake third, mainly by reducing portion sizes, you can improve performance in memory tests.

This could be because weight loss lowers insulin levels, which possibly leads to less inflammation in the brain insulin, which is what causes the damage and memory loss. This does not mean you have to start a diet like crazy, because even a high body mass index leads to a worse performance on tests of memory, orientation, attention and calculation, as does a low body index. Ideally, a middle, and our body weight is within a healthy body mass index.

A mainly Mediterranean-style diet may help protect against dementia. This means basing meals and snacks in a lot of vegetables and fruits, legumes and whole grains, plus some oily fish and other seafood. These diets include small amounts of red meat (a couple of small meals a week) and dairy products like butter and cream, along with moderate amounts of alcohol (often red wine) and unsaturated fats like olive oil.

When U.S. scientists found groups of people who lived in New York, found that those whose diets were closer to the principles of the Mediterranean, had a 28% less likely to experience mild cognitive impairment (MCI, for its acronym in English) that those who followed a diet of more Western tradition. It was also noted that those already experiencing symptoms of MCI also had almost 50% less risk of the disease progresses to Alzheimer’s lead by adjusting their diets.

In another study, French researchers have linked the ingestion of large amounts of foods rich in super nutrients called flavonoids with the slowdown of cognitive impairment. Since the flavonoid-rich foods are often in Mediterranean diets (including onions, eggplant, endive, berries, citrus and red wine), this could help explain the possible protective effects.

Experts say do not rush to draw conclusions from the relatively small amount of evidence we have, we can not ensure that a Mediterranean diet change to prevent memory loss or Alzheimer’s, but having a normal weight and eat a lot fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and not too much saturated fat is known to be good for many aspects of health.

Walking, gardening and climbing stairs can often help reduce the risk of vascular dementia by 73%, according to researchers from University Hospital S. Orsola Malpighi, in Bologna, Italy, probably to enhance the flow of blood rich in oxygen to the brain.

Scientists at Tufts University in Boston, say that three new international studies suggest that consumption of fish and omega-3 fatty acids protects against cognitive decline, dementia and Alzheimer’s.

Animal research also suggests that drinking coffee may reduce the risk of dementia.

A new Swedish study suggests that children who eat more fish get better grades.

Certain fish are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are related to coronary health benefits and is known to help complete the development of premature babies girl, but said the effect was the same in the case of babies premature child. The new evidence supports the idea that these simple acids may actually contribute to enhance children’s brain afterwards in his life, when they reach adolescence and are thinking about college.

Almost 5,000 participants, all of 15 years, ate fish more than once a week for a period of three years. At age 15, children completed detailed questionnaires about their lives and their eating habits and, later, at 18, performed a standard intelligence test. After analyzing all the data, results, published in the journal Acta Pediatric, suggest that omega-3 fatty acids found in oily fish like salmon, albacore tuna and mackerel improve scores on tests in later years of his life.

The lead researcher Dr. Maria Aberg, of Goteborg University, stresses the importance of this study, the largest of its kind, because teenagers have a small space in time at which their brains can fully develop the necessary connections for emotional behavior, social and intellectual whereby respond to physical harm, or the ability to adopt a new skill. The development of this connection and reorganization within the brain that occurs in the later years of adolescence is called “plasticity.” With respect to new experience, plasticity, also known as neuroplasticity, is the ability of the brain, throughout life, to reorganize neural pathways. Through learning we are constantly asking our brain to expand and to remember things like the rules of a game or how to get to school, and with that memory functional changes occur in the brain that represent all these new facts, figures, directions and processes of life.

According to Aberg, these results are a big step for the future of children: “These results are important because the study was conducted between 15 and 18 when educational achievements can help to shape the rest of the life of a young “. The boys who ate fish more than once a week had higher test scores at age 18 than those who ate fish just once a week or less, and the results remained even after taking into account other factors such as environment family, social and economic development.

Walnuts contain polyphenols and other antioxidants and essential fatty acids.
The study, conducted by researchers at Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts, has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

With aging, the brain undergoes many changes that can lead to alterations or damage to neuronal functioning. These disorders can be attributed in part to alterations in “synaptic plasticity” or ability of the connections between neurons to change in function and strength, and also to an increase in oxidative damage to neuronal tissue. In rodents aged, these injuries are seen in their poor performance on tests of balance, coordination and memory “space”.

For the study, aged rats were assigned, combined by weight to one of four dietary groups. Before tests of memory and motor skills, rats were fed for eight weeks, with special mixtures containing 2% 6% or 9% walnuts or no nuts. The diet with 6% of nuts is equivalent to a human takes about 7-9 nuts a day.

The study found that in aged rats, diets containing 2% or 6% walnuts helped to cope with cognitive and motor difficulties associated with age, while 9% diet of nuts damaged memory reference. According to the researchers, walnuts, consumed in moderation, appear to be among the foods which by their content of polyphenols and bioactive substances, have multiple effects on neuronal tissue.

There is no denying that our body ages us chronologically, but the latest research indicates that we can increase the chances of maintaining a healthy brain to an age well into incorporating these foods into our daily diet:

Blueberries: In animal studies, researchers have found that blueberries help protect the brain from oxidative stress and may reduce the effects of aging-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s or dementia. Studies also suggest that a diet rich in blueberries significantly increases learning capacity and motor skills of aging rats and may be compared to other mentally much younger rats.

Wild Salmon: Salmon is rich in essential fatty acids omega-3 fatty acids, which contain anti-inflammatory substances and are essential for brain function are also found in other fatty fish and some specially modified products.

Nuts and seeds: nuts and seeds are good sources of vitamin E and high levels of this vitamin results in less cognitive decline during aging. Should add about 30 grams per day of walnuts, hazelnuts, Brazil nuts, almonds, cashews, peanuts, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds, etc.. (It is best to take them naturally and without salt).

Avocados: as good as blueberries for brain health, and also is a fruit that contains monounsaturated fat, which helps maintain healthy blood circulation. Avocados also lower blood pressure, and since hypertension is a risk factor for deterioration of cognitive skills, lower blood pressure should enhance brain health.

Grains: whole grains such as oats, whole wheat bread and brown rice can reduce the risk of heart disease. If you improve cardiovascular health, enhances the body’s functioning, including the brain.

Legumes: beans are inexpensive and you stabilize blood glucose (blood sugar). The brain uses glucose as fuel, since it can store depends on a continuous energy input, the beans can provide this energy.

Pomegranate juice: it provides a powerful antioxidant benefits, protecting the brain from damage caused by free radicals. You can also eat the fruit itself but its many tiny seeds, do not be as practical as the juice. Other citrus fruits and vegetables are also important antioxidant properties.

Freshly brewed tea, two or three cups a day of freshly brewed tea (hot or cold) contain a modest amount of caffeine consumed in moderation, can boost brain power by improving memory, attention and mood.

Dark chocolate: has significant antioxidant properties, contains several natural stimulants (including caffeine), which enhance focus and concentration, and stimulates production of endorphins, which helps improve mood. About 30 grams a day is enough.
