How does Metformin?
Blocking the production of glucose (sugar) by the liver, increasing the sensitivity of muscle cells to insulin and reducing the amount of sugar that captures the intestine. Although it may fail the first time you take, is a very effective drug with few side effects, which are not serious, as stomach upset and loss of weight (which for many is a benefit). However, metformin is not recommended during pregnancy or when you have liver problems, kidney or heart.
To create the new recommendations for oral (taken) for diabetes, inspectors observed data for each class group of drugs available (currently eleven classes, according to the Food and Drug Administration of the United States known as FDA) to assess how effective it was in reducing blood glucose (blood sugar), cholesterol and weight.
They found that metformin (which in the United States is sold under the brand name Glucophage or in combination with other drugs, Avandamet and Glucovance) was most effective in controlling glycemia long term. In addition, the drug appeared to be more effective in reducing bad cholesterol levels and more effective in preventing death from all causes, including heart disease. Read the rest of this entry »
Metformin | Drug of choice for type 2 diabetes
More than 346 million people worldwide have diabetes, a disease characterized by excess blood glucose and that, although often no symptoms, over time can damage various organs and body functions such as sight, circulatory system, kidneys and nervous system. Among the different drugs that exist to control the so-called metformin appears to be most effective.
Type 2 diabetes is a condition that is characterized by high blood glucose (sugar) in the blood because the body (pancreas) does not produce enough insulin or have resistance to insulin that is produced (or is that cells do not respond well to it). Many people may have no symptoms, especially at first. However, if not kept under control, is slowly damaging other organs, such as the eyes, heart, blood circulation and kidney function and may even endanger the life of people .
Thus, diabetes is one of the most troubling health conditions today, as it is associated with obesity, sedentary lifestyle and, in general, with the pace of life in modern society. Imagine that as the World Health Organization, more than 346 million people with diabetes in the world today and is forecast to deaths from this disease could double between 2005 and 2030! Epidural Anesthesia: What are The Side Effects?
What are the side effects?
The most common are:
- Drop in blood pressure: this happens in most cases and is easily treated by administration of serums and medications at the time. For this reason the patient’s blood pressure is often measured as the epidural is administered.
- Headache: Also known as spinal headache, I happen to 1% of patients who received an epidural. Occurs when the needle passes through the dura (membrane surrounding the spinal cord) and inadvertently passed to the spinal space where the bone is lodged. This is easily treated by the anesthesiologist. Read the rest of this entry »
Epidural Anesthesia
What is epidural anesthesia?
Epidural anesthesia, which is also known as anesthesia of the nerve roots, is used to numb the nerve roots exit the spinal cord. This is done by injecting a local anesthetic or an analgesic (pain medication). It is commonly used during childbirth to ease the pain of it, and has recently been introduced also use surgery to prevent pain that occurs after certain interventions and to reduce complications such as chest infections and thrombosis in the legs lack of mobility.
During labor, epidural anesthesia usually begins when there are contractions and is given once the cervix has begun to dilate. It is completely effective in about 96% of cases, and about two thirds of Spanish women benefit from it when they give birth. However, these figures vary considerably from one hospital to another. Anashesia: Is The Anesthetic Safe?
Why not be allowed to eat and drink before an operation?
If there is food or drink in the stomach, the patient may vomit or regurgitate under anesthesia. This vomiting can get into the lungs and as the body is sedated by anesthesia, it loses its ability to expel by coughing. This can cause serious lung damage. Generally not allowed to eat in the six hours before surgery, although in some cases can drink clear liquids, primarily water, up to two hours earlier.
What happens to the dental caps or loose teeth?
At the onset of anesthesia is often necessary to insert a tube in his throat to aid breathing. The instrument used for this can easily damage teeth loose covers, so the anesthesiologist asked if there in order to take precautions to avoid it. The same problem exists with dentures must be removed to avoid interfering with breathing. Read the rest of this entry »
Anasthesia
What is anesthesia?
Anesthesia is defined generically by a series of drugs that temporarily reduce feelings, or eliminated, so that it can perform surgery or other procedures that would otherwise be painful.
There are two types of anesthesia:
- General: the patient is asleep.
- Local: in which the patient is awake, sleeping only part of the body on which to operate.
The anesthesia-induced sleep is not the same as the ordinary or natural sleep, but a form of temporary unconsciousness carefully monitored by the anesthesiologist by administering the correct amount of anesthesia for each type of operation and patient. Read the rest of this entry »
