Retaining your Employer Group Health Insurance
You may have health insurance that has served you well for years. Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones whose employer still pays all or a good portion of your monthly family health insurance cost. Count your blessings. You might not yet know what it would cost to replace that health insurance should your employer change their benefit package or worse yet should you lose your job.
There is a nationally mandated health insurance coverage plan called COBRA that make it easy for you to retain your family health insurance package on your own for a temporary time period should your converge cease for job termination or reduction in hours. The COBRA (Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1985) doesn’t help to pay for the health insurance, it simply provides a vehicle for you to retain your existing policy and it does so at the individual rate. Your employer got his per employee rate for health insurance due to having a group policy with all the discounts that are afforded by that arrangement.
You on the other hand are just you, not a group, and your monthly family health insurance will be available to you through COBRA at that individual rate. Its not a bargain rate by any means but it does provide the opportunity for continuous health insurance benefits which could be life saving when it comes to pre-existing conditions or any current medical malady your family may be going through at the time.
